Ghost Recon Breakpoint Not Pay to Win Insists Ubisoft, Skill Point and Booster Sales Nixed

Earlier this week, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint launched for those who bought the Gold or Ultimate Edition, or signed up to Uplay+, and as we reported, many of these early adopters were taken aback by the game’s out-of-control microtransactions. Of course, players could use Breakpoint’s new Ghost Coins premium currency to buy cosmetics, but they could also directly buy vehicles, weapons, upgrades for those weapons, skill points used to unlock character perks, bundles of crafting materials, and XP boosters for the game’s battle-pass-style progression system.

Well, Ubisoft has now acknowledged the backlash via a post on the Breakpoint forums. They insist the game is not pay to win, but only after removing skill point bundles, XP Boosters, and weapon upgrades from Breakpoint’s in-game store. According to Ubisoft, these “time savers” were only intended to be added to the game in the future, so that those arriving late to the party could catch up. Mmm hmm. Or In other words, “The plan was to sneak this stuff in later, but we accidentally turned it on when people were actually paying attention. Whoops!”

Per Ubisoft, this is the overall philosophy guiding their MTX decisions:

With Ghost Recon Breakpoint, we always aimed at offering a fair and rewarding experience to our players however they want to experience our game, in solo, co-op, PvE or PvP. From the beginning, two key factors stood out as extremely important for the team.

  • That Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint doesn’t include any pay-to-win elements.
  • To make sure that players not choosing to engage with in-game purchases do not see their experience affected. Players will be able to unlock skills and get access to plenty of varied loot & items by simply playing the game.

Well, we’ll see if Ubisoft sticks to these ideals. According to them, being able to spend real money on skill points and other pretty obvious pay-to-win stuff has only been removed “for now.”

Ghost Recon Breakpoint will be available for all PC, Xbox One, and PS4 players starting tomorrow (October 4).
